HuffPo: Nick Clegg's new thinking on Arab Spring

Over at the Huffington Post, I have written a longer piece about Nick Clegg's speech about the Arab Spring. This is another defining moment for Liberal Democrat foreign policy. I'd be really pleased to hear others' views if you want to post comments, either here or at the HuffPo piece itself.

  1. like to hear him expand on the situation in Bahrain! That hypocrisy shown be the west will be a recruiting sergeant for extremists.

  2. Hmm, I don't agree. Nick Clegg does refer to Bahrain in at least one of the speeches to which I have linked. I blogged about Bahrain myself at: http://matthewfharris.blogspot.com/2011/05/is-anyone-surprised.html Was military intervention there the answer? I'd be interested to hear your thoughts, thanks.

  3. Some thoughts from early on which I don't see reason to change, http://goo.gl/RCUhg

Your blog post of the 29th May is very perceptive, as one would expect of a liberal outlook. There is great danger in the years ahead for this flowering of freedom; maybe democracy.

  4. Thank you, I was very interested to read the piece on your site. One reason that we have intervened in Libya, and not elsewhere, is that the Gaddafi regime appeared to be preparing for a wholesale massacre of civilians in Benghazi. Some people made the comparison with our failure to intervene in Rwanda before the massacres there - hence the need for us to act in Libya, specifically to prevent a deliberate massacre of such enormity, even while we are not intervening in all other situations in which civilians are being killed.
